Festival expands to both riverbanks

By Gina Holt
Enquirer contributor

The 16th annual Great Inland Seafood Festival's latest move — to both sides of the river — is a compromise.

IF YOU GO
What: Great Inland Seafood Festival, Yeatman's Cove at the floodwall in Cincinnati and Riverboat Row in Newport.
   When: 5-11 p.m. today, noon-11 p.m. Saturday and noon-10 p.m. Sunday.
Cost: Admission is free. Food prices vary. Kids' rides cost a small fee.
Transportation: River shuttle will take patrons across river. Round-trip ticket cost $3. Kids under 2: free.
   Information: 684-4722
“After 14 years in Cincinnati, we had the event in Newport last year,” said festival chairman Marc Wertheim. “Cincinnati was upset we moved the event last year; so rather than leaving our new home, we decided to expand the event.”

Mr. Wertheim said the festival did well in Cincinnati over the years, but there were conflicts.

“Cincinnati was very expensive and had regulations that were hard to deal with,” he said.

Newport, he said, only charges for costs associated with setup, security and cleanup.

“Our philosophy with having these types of events is, it's more people coming to our community,” Newport City Manager Phil Ciafardini said.

He said Newport supports having the three-day festival at Riverboat Row and Yeatman's Cove in Cincinnati, but Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken isn't as optimistic.

“I wish we had it all,” Mr. Luken said, “but half is better than none, which is what we faced last year.

“Because Kentucky is a stone's throw away from Ohio, we face a competition for festivals and events that other cities don't face.”

For $3, visitors can use a river shuttle to visit both states.

Mr. Wertheim expects this year's crowds to exceed last year's estimated attendance of 175,000.

Mr. Wertheim said there will be more than a dozen food booths on each side of the river.
