Obituary: P. Dimitry combined culture, eateries

Active community member was 89

By Rebecca Billman, rbillman@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Historical events that forced thousands of people from their homes in Asia Minor swept a 14-year-old boy and his family to Cincinnati.

Paul H. Dimitry, owner of the former Manhattan and Dimitry's restaurants and a leader in Greater Cincinnati's Greek community, died Tuesday at his Westwood home.

Mr. Dimitry, 89, was born in 1912 in Moudania, a Greek city on the Sea of Marmara in Asia Minor.

Although the area was controlled by Greece and was home to large numbers of Greeks, Turkish nationals hoped to drive them out.

The Dimitry family immigrated to the United States, settling in Cincinnati in 1927.

Mr. Dimitry got his start in the restaurant business polishing silver for the Netherland Hotel in 1931.

Seven years later, he opened his first restaurant, Esquire Grille, downtown.

In 1943, Mr. Dimitry and a partner opened the Manhattan Restaurant on Fifth Street. It was closed in 1965 to make way for renewal work downtown.

Mr. Dimitry then trotted out his mother's recipes and opened Dimitry's Restaurant on Seventh Street in 1972.

Mr. Dimitry was dedicated to his church. A chanter at Holy Trinity Church, he also served in every capacity on the parish council. He was a member of the building fund committee when the new Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was built in 1972.

Mr. Dimitry was a member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, a 60-year member of the Norwood-Winton Lodge No. 576 F&AM, a member of the Scottish Rite and Oola Khan and past president of the Cheviot-Westwood Lions Club.

In addition to Kalliope Sgouris Dimitry, his wife of 63 years, survivors include two daughters, Anna Jonson of Loveland and Elaine Cardullias of Green Township; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today at the Dalbert, Woodruff & Isenogle Funeral Home, 2880 Boudinot Ave. There will be a service by the AHEPA-Liberty Chapter No. 127 at 6:45 p.m. followed by an F&AM and Scottish Rite service at 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral is 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Burial is at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the church at 7000 Winton Road, Cincinnati 45224; or the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Cincinnati Chapter, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati 45203.
