Vernon Stiver, longtime lawyer, city solicitor and community volunteer in Loveland, died from an aortic aneurysm Aug. 2 in Dunedin, Fla.

        Mr. Stiver, 76, helped create Loveland Kiwanis, and Nisbet and Phillips parks in Loveland, as well as the Loveland bike trail. He was also a founder of the Normandy Swim Club and the local free store.

        “He constantly was volunteering in the city,” said his son, Shawn of Loveland. “I couldn't list all the things he did.”

        A graduate of the Salmon P. Chase College of Law, Mr. Stiver was a general practitioner specializing in domestic relations in Loveland for 40 years. His son said he often provided free legal services to the poor.

        Mr. Stiver served two stints as city solicitor — in the '60s and again in the '70s.

        In 1964, he was an unendorsed Democratic candidate for the state senate.

        Mr. Stiver was born and raised in Germantown, Ohio. He served with the 87th Infantry Division Company L during World War II.

        Interested in his genealogy, he researched and co-wrote an award-winning book, Stover-Stoever-Staver-Stiver, Ancestry and Descendents of Johann Caspar Stoever, in 1992.

        Mr. Stiver was a member of the Loveland Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce and Historical Society, as well as the Warren, Clermont and Hamilton County bar associations, the VFW and the American Legion.

        He loved golf, hunting, tennis, fishing, big band music and comedy.

        After retiring about 10 years ago, he moved from Loveland to Dunedin.

        In addition to his son Shawn, survivors include: his wife, Mary; a daughter, Shelley McWhorter of Louisville; another son, Scott Stiver of Loveland; and five grandchildren.

        A memorial service is 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Loveland United Methodist Church, 10975 Lebanon Road.

        Mr. Stiver's remains have been cremated.
