MONTREAL Center Doug Gilmour re-signed with the Montreal Canadiens, agreeing to a one-year deal with an option for the 2003-04 season.
Gilmour, 39, enters his 20th NHL season and second with Montreal.
He is fifth among active players with 1,384 career points (439 goals, 945 assists). Gilmour also ranks seventh among active players for most games played with 1,412 in stints with St. Louis, Calgary, Toronto, New Jersey, Chicago, Buffalo and Montreal. In 70 games with the Canadiens last season, Gilmour had 10 goals and 31 assists.
Agent: Berard close to signing with Bruins
Bryan Berard is close to signing with the Boston Bruins to continue his comeback from a career-threatening eye injury. Berard could sign next week, agent Tom Laidlaw told the Canadian Press Association.
Berard earned $2 million with the New York Rangers last season, when he had two goals and 21 assists while playing in all 82 games. The team did not pick up a $3 million option on his contract.
Berard, 25, almost lost his eye in March 2000, when he was hit by Ottawa's Marian Hossa while playing for Toronto.
Berard has been fitted with a special contact that barely improves his vision. A new deal would help him continue to pay off a $6.5 million insurance settlement he received after the injury.
The insurance company that agreed to his return last year must also sign off on the deal.
RED WINGS: Captain Steve Yzerman, 37, is expected to recover from knee surgery in time for the second half of the season.
I want to play, but I accept the fact that if it hurts too much, you get to the point where it doesn't make sense, Yzerman told the Detroit News. If I get to that point, I won't play. Common sense would take over.
SHARKS: Defenseman Marcus Ragnarsson signed a one-year, $2.3 million contract shortly before his arbitration hearing was set to begin.
BLUES: St. Louis signed free agent defenseman Aris Brimanis, 30, who appeared in five games with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks last season. He also played 72 games with AHL Cincinnati, contributing two goals and nine assists.
SABRES: The first of what could potentially be five ownership groups is preparing to file a bid to purchase the financially troubled NHL franchise. Sherry Bassin, owner of the Ontario Hockey League's Erie Otters, is less than a week away from formally submitting an offer on the NHL team, Bassin's partner Alan Maislin told a number of Buffalo media outlets Friday.
