Defunct orphanage for blacks to hold reunion

GLENDALE - The New Colored Orphan Home Reunion 2002 will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at 176 Washington Ave., Glendale.

The New Colored Orphan Home operated for 123 years when black children weren't allowed in other orphanages. Its first location was on Ninth Street downtown, but it moved to a former Underground Railroad site in Avondale in 1866. The orphanage closed in 1967.

Former residents and their families are asked to bring chairs and a covered dish. Games will be available for adults and children.

Earlier in the day, participants will attend the 11 a.m. service at Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church.

For more information, contact Brenda Parrish Miller, 541-0071.
