BURLINGTON A Price Hill man who still had time to serve on his prison sentence in Ohio was allowed to post a $500 cash bond and walk away from the Boone County jail this month.
Brian Gribbins, 26, was a free man for 14 days until he was recaptured Wednesday by officers from an Ohio fugitive task force.
JoEllen Culp, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, said officers found Mr. Gribbins hiding out at a home in Greater Cincinnati.
The bureaucratic oversight that led to Mr. Gribbins' brief freedom started on July 12, when Boone County sheriff's deputies picked him up at a prison in Ohio. The deputies were taking Mr. Gribbins to Burlington, where he faces one count of theft.
Boone County District Judge Charles Moore set Mr. Gribbins' bond at $500 on July 15. Mr. Gribbins made two appearances in Boone County court before a judge determined there was evidence to bind over the case to a grand jury. Mr. Gribbins was released Aug. 1 after he posted bail.
The problem, Ohio officials say, was that Mr. Gribbins still had 15 years to serve there for theft and violating parole.
Boone County Jailer Ed Prindle said the jail was not given the proper paperwork to hold Mr. Gribbins.
It's obvious we were not the only ones who didn't know he was serving time in Ohio, he said. Otherwise, a judge would not have set bond.
