Thunderstorms tore across the Tristate Sunday afternoon, bringing lightning that sparked several fires and left five people slightly injured when a bolt hit near a soccer tournament.
The five apparently got a mild shock when lightning struck the ground about 2:30 p.m. at Miami Meadows Park in Miami Township. At least three of the five people were taken to area hospitals, where they were treated and observed for several hours, authorities said.
Lightning caused an estimated $75,000 in damage to a Colerain Township barn and its contents.
AccuWeather meteorologist Kerry Schwindenhammer said some areas saw up to 2 inches of rain and heavy winds.
Cincinnati Gas and Electric spokesman Steve Brash said about 25,200 customers lost power during the storm. About 1,300 were still without power Sunday night.
Lightning is also suspected of causing fires at a Montgomery house and a Union Township apartment building.
A home in The Reserve in Montgomery caught fire at 3:30 p.m. No one was home at the time. In Union Township, damage was contained mostly to four apartments in the 48-unit building at 4448 Eastwood Drive.
A tree was struck by lightning in Crestview Hills, Ky., and landed on top of a condo. Crestview Police said no one was injured when the tree hit 299 Secretariat Court at 4:30 p.m.
Mr. Schwindenhammer said there is a chance for another storm today.
