Kentucky clinches Little League semifinal berth

Kentucky 2, New York 0

By DAN LEWERENZ
Associated Press Writer

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — So much for Harlem Little League's powerful bats. Zachary Osborne scored two runs and threw 14 strikeouts to lead Louisville, Ky., to a 2-0 victory over Harlem, N.Y., Sunday night in pool play at the Little League World Series, clinching Louisville a spot in the U.S. semifinals.

Osborne reached third base on a triple up the right field line in the top of the third, then came home on a fielder's choice to give Louisville a 2-0 lead. Louisville loaded the bases with just one out, but Lopez struck out two to end the side.

Osborne (1-0) also was composed on the mound, allowing Harlem (1-1) runners into scoring position in the third and fourth before throwing strikeouts to end the innings.

Harlem loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning, with Javier Lopez, Alibay Barkley and Jorge Lopez each recording base hits. But Osborne struck out Fernando Frias and Spencer White to end the game.

“I was really nervous in the last inning,” Osborne said. “Bases loaded, two outs, with their No. 5 hitter. I just took a deep breath, calmed down and struck the guy out.”

In other games Sunday, Aptos, Calif., beat Clemmons, N.C., 11-8; Fort Worth, Texas, shut out Waipahu, Hawaii, 8-0; and Agana, Guam, beat Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, 9-6. Monterrey, Mexico, played Moscow Sunday night.

Harlem manager Morris McWilliams described Kentucky as just an “all right” team with a good pitcher on the mound, saying the game turned on his team's errors.

“We committed three errors, and that's how they scored,” McWilliams said. “They didn't score any earned runs.”

Jeremy Lopez (0-1) struck out eight in a losing effort.

Louisville took a 1-0 lead in the first when Osborne hit a single, advanced on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice, and scored from third on an error.

Harlem got its first two hits — a Julian McWillaims grounder to right field and a Javier Lopez grounder to third base — in the bottom of the third. But both runners were stranded when Osborne struck out Jeremy Lopez. Jorge Lopez reached third in the fourth inning, but Osborne struck out White to end the inning.

“This is a huge win for us,” said Louisville manager J. Troy Osborne, the pitcher's father. “Harlem is very aggressive, very big kids, very strong kids. When they hit, they hit the ball hard. We feel lucky to come out with a 2-0 record.”

        California 11, North Carolina 8

California (1-1) scored six runs in the bottom fourth inning on a Brian Godoy grand slam and Andrew Biancardi's two-run homer.

The game was tied 4-4 when North Carolina's (0-2) Alex Robertson hit a two-run homer and Christopher Sanders followed with a solo blast in the top of the fourth.

        Texas 8, Hawaii 0

Walker Kelly hit two doubles, scored two runs and had three RBIs for Texas, which had 13 hits.

Hawaii had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Sean Clark grounded to Texas third-baseman Mitchell Belew, who tagged the base and threw to first for the double play to preserve the shutout.

        Guam 9, Saudi Arabia 6

Down 6-4 in the top of the sixth, Guam got a three-run homer Taylor Taitague and solo shots from John Dazo and Hosea Ware.

Tommy Timoner scored Saudi Arabia's first run on a wild pitch in the first. Nicholas Gosse scored on a Jordan Fleck grounder, and two runs scored on an infield error, giving Saudi Arabia a 4-0 lead in the first.
