Obituary: Elias L. Levine, engine designer

His GEAE team brought technology into modern era

By Rebecca Billman, rbillman@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

SYCAMORE TWP. — Elias L. Levine, one of the people responsible for development of the engines used in the F-16 fighter and B-2 bomber, as well as by the Boeing and Airbus companies, died Aug. 12 at University Hospital.

        He was 77.

Mr. Levine was an engineer for GE Aircraft Engines “during the time period that most of the current engines that are the backbone of the business were developed,” said Lee Kapor of Amberley Village, retired vice president of commercial engine operations at GE Aircraft Engines.

Mr. Levine was part of a team responsible for developing controls that improved the safety of commercial and military engines. “He was there during the most exciting era of engine development,” Mr. Kapor said.

“He was a bright fellow who enjoyed sharing his knowledge and experience with other people. In addition to contributing to the development of engines, he contributed to the next generation of engineers (at GE).”

Mr. Levine was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and lived in Montreal; Mount Vernon, N.Y.; and Louisville before settling in Cincinnati in 1940.

He was a student at Walnut Hills High School, where he was on the swim team, and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering.

During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946, working on the firing control system for the B-29 bomber at Lowry Field in Denver before being shipped out to Marseilles, France.

He went to work for GE after a stint with the Bendix Corp.

Mr. Levine was a student of naval history and an expert on the World War I Battle of Jutland. He was also a lover of science fiction and a religious school teacher at Adath Israel Synagogue in Amberley Village.

Services have been held. Interment was at Adath Israel Cemetery in Price Hill.

Survivors include Betty Wiener Levine, his wife of 53 years; two sons, Jon and Steve Levine; and a brother, Dr. Isaac Levine of Amberley Village.

Memorials: Adath Israel Synagogue, 3201 E. Galbraith Road, Cincinnati 45236.
