Officer shoots at fleeing suspects

NORTH COLLEGE HILL - Three men accused in an armed holdup at the Checksmart Payroll Advance early Saturday were jailed after a police chase that involved an officer firing his gun at the getaway car.

Chief Paul R. Toth said the unidentified North College Hill officer was out of his cruiser and fired at the suspects' vehicle after it nearly ran him down. Four bullets struck the car.

The officer had tried to block off the exit to a nearby parking lot after seeing the suspects attempting to flee, police said.

Antoine Mauldin, Terrance Thomas and Chauncey Walker were arrested off Shamrock Avenue after they bailed out of getaway car and ran, police said. No other information was available on the suspects.

The incident started about 7:30 a.m. after a female clerk activated an alarm at the West Galbraith Road store. The woman, who received minor injuries, told police that three men had assaulted her and forced her to open the safe.

Police said they recovered two handguns, cash taken from the store and walkie-talkies that were apparently used during the hold up.
