15 locations cited for selling alcohol to minor

17-year-olds sold beer at 2 Boone County stores

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Fifteen locations throughout Boone County failed to check identification of an undercover 19-year-old who tried to buy beer last weekend. They have been cited by the Boone County Sheriff's department as law enforcement reacted to parental complaints.

From Florence to Walton, Hebron and Burlington, at stores ranging from gas stations to liquor stores to large discount stores, clerks failed to card the undercover agent in an 11-hour operation conducted Saturday night.

In addition, at two locations in Walton, 17-year-old clerks were selling alcohol to minors, the citations show.

“We've had violations in the past, probably not this many. It's been several years since we've had this many,” said Major Jack Banks of the Sheriff's Department.

“We've received a number of complaints recently from parents whose kids had acquired alcoholic beverages,” Major Banks said.

The sheriff's department issued 17 citations at 15 locations, Major Banks said. At 11 locations, clerks and proprietors obeyed the law and carded the young woman, Major Banks said.

“She entered the store, went directly to the cooler, picked up a six-pack of beer and placed it on the counter, at which time she should have been carded. If she wasn't and they sold her the alcohol, they were cited.”

The citations, which will be heard in Boone County District Court, carry a fine and the possibility of jail time.

“It's a well-known law. It's posted in all the stores; it's required to be posted in the stores,” Major Banks said.

Major Banks said he didn't think Boone County was alone or unusual in the volume of sales of alcohol to underage customers.

“I think it is a widespread problem. I think there are varying degrees of the problem,” he said.

The sheriff's office will work with the Alcoholic Beverage Control board to determine if the stores have any previous offenses.

        Where the citations were issued:

UDF, 1792 South Limaburg Road, Sue Shannarain
Ameristop, 2514 Burlington Pike, Christopher M. Houze
