LEBANON - A former treasurer accused of stealing $16,000 from the Waynesville Baseball Association was among 13 people indicted by the Warren County grand jury.
Craig Winningham, 37, of Waynesville was indicted on one count of grand theft. If convicted, he could face up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Mr. Winningham began coaching in the baseball league in 1998 and took on the duties of treasurer in 2001. League officials became suspicious in July 2001 after checks started bouncing for umpire fees.
A deal to pay back some of the money was called off in June. Mr. Winningham's lawyer has said no one had proof that his client's signature was on the checks written to cash, or that the money was spent on anything but baseball expenses.
In other grand jury matters, five sexual offenders were indicted for not registering their new addresses with the Warren County sheriff. If convicted of the felony, they face up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
If they're going to another state or another locality, it gives us a chance to notify police, Warren County Prosecutor Tim Oliver said Monday.
The fact that the five were indicted at the same time was a coincidence, said Sheriff's Lt. Jerry Mays. In one case, police heard the sexual offender's name over the police scanner for another incident, checked his address and realized he had moved.
