Art from the ashes
Day of destruction inspires year of creation
By Marilyn Bauer mbauer@enquirer.com

We were innocents. On Sept. 1, 2001, we were unaware the world was edging toward a catastrophe that would take more than 2,000 lives and destroy two iconic towers in the cradle of culture, New York.
We made plans to fly home for the holidays and complained about mates, traffic and the conservative conspiracy in Cincinnati. We didn't worry about the future or death from the sky by fundamentalist fanatics bent. We didn't think twice about opening our mail, carrying tweezers in our purse or what might be hidden in the sole of a shoe.
Now we do.
Our artists, barometers of the times, have taken the destruction and transformed it through creation. We asked them to share their efforts with us, and they did.
In painting, sculpture, glassworks and quilts they have helped us heal through their representations of our collective experience. They have interpreted a new world order with beauty, grace and compassion.
They, too, are heroes.
