Shooting hearing delayed

HAMILTON A competency hearing Wednesday for the woman charged in the fatal shooting of a Miami University professor in July was delayed until Oct. 8 so Butler County prosecutors can have a state-appointed psychologist evaluate her mental health.
A psychologist for the defense has submitted her written opinion about Tonda Lynn Ansley's mental state, but Butler County Common Pleas Judge Keith Spaeth sealed it Wednesday.
Ms. Ansley, who has said she wishes to represent herself, requested a copy of the opinion. But Judge Spaeth gave Butler County prosecutors and Ms. Ansley's attorney, Melynda Cook-Reich, until 2 p.m. Friday to file motions arguing for and against Ms. Ansley's request.
Judge Spaeth also held off deciding Wednesday whether Ms. Ansley can represent herself because he wants more information about her mental state.
Ms. Ansley, 36, faces 23 years to life if convicted of aggravated murder with a gun specification in the July 27 fatal shooting of Sherry Lee Corbett, 55.
Ms. Cook-Reich has filed a not guilty by reason of insanity plea on Ms. Ansley's behalf, but Ms. Ansley said she does not want that plea.
Ms. Corbett was shot in broad daylight in the city's Dayton Lane historic district, where both women lived.
Ms. Corbett had been Ms. Ansley's landlord. Neighbors had said they were unaware of any landlord-tenant dispute between the women. In a rambling admission to police, Ms. Ansley said she wanted to kill more people.
