18 counties told they could run out of water

By The Associated Press

FRANKFORT - A water-shortage watch was issued Friday for 18 counties in the Bluegrass region.

The Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet announced the watch, which indicates conditions are more favorable than usual for a water shortage.

Some water systems may have to consider voluntary or mandatory water conservation measures, the agency said.

Kentucky's Bluegrass area is approaching a severe drought, according to the Palmer Drought Index.

Counties in the region are Anderson, Bath, Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Fleming, Franklin, Grant, Harrison, Jessamine, Mercer, Montgomery, Nicholas, Owen, Pendleton, Robertson, Scott and Woodford.

The agency said water suppliers should watch supply sources and notify the Division of Water before shortages become critical.
