       SUNSHINE STATE SUPREMACY

Top-ranked Miami routed No. 6 Florida 41-16 in the first regular-season meeting between the in-state rivals since 1987. The defeat was Florida's worst at home since 1979, a 40-0 loss to Alabama. The 41 points were the most the Gators have given up at home since 1970, when they lost 63-14 to Auburn. Ken Dorsey threw four TD passes to lead the Hurricanes.

       VERSATILITY

Tailback Jesse Raynor, from Alfred University, ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-26 loss to St. John Fisher. Raynor also caught 11 passes for 86 yards, returned four kickoffs for 165 yards (including one for 85 yards), kicked two field goals and blocked a punt.

        PITCH AND CATCH

Donald Clark threw a career-high five TDs, four of them to Kevin Simmonds, as Howard defeated Texas Southern 34-31. Simmonds' four TD receptions tied a school record.

        BEEN THERE, DONE THAT

Division I-AA Holy Cross, coached by Dan Allen, defeated Army 30-21 in the season opener for both teams. Gerome Sapp and Lionel Bolen scored TDs on fumble returns 11 seconds apart, Vontez Duff had a 33-yard interception return for a TD and Nicholas Setta scored six points on three PATs and a field goal to account for Notre Dame's scoring. Notre Dame (2-0) has yet to score an offensive TD this season.

        FIRST OT

Steve Massie ran for a 4-yard TD as Air Force defeated New Mexico 38-31 in overtime — the first OT game involving teams from the four-year-old Mountain West Conference. Air Force emptied its play book in the game, running two halfback passes, a tackle-eligible pass, and even having a running back take a direct snap while his teammates tied their shoes.

        SPEAKING

“I told them all, if you can't get off the field when the game's over, don't worry, we'll have carts to get you off the field. But we're going to leave it all on the field.” — Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry, whose team defeated New Mexico 38-31 in overtime.

        ———

“I think it a wake-up call to everyone else that we are here to stay. We have always known that we have been here and nobody is giving us any respect. I think it opens up a lot of people's eyes that we didn't fall off.” Miami center Brett Romberg, after the No. 1 Hurricanes beat No. 6 Florida 41-16.
