Northeastern 31, Ohio 0

The Associated Press

ATHENS, Ohio — Art Smith returned a fumble 49 yards for a touchdown and Gavin Potter scored on a 5-yard interception return as Northeastern beat Ohio 31-0 Saturday night.

The Division I-AA Huskies (2-0) turned four turnovers by the Bobcats (0-2) into 21 points. Shawn Brady threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Lawlor in the third quarter after Ohio's Fred Ray fumbled on a sack.

Northeastern took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Bobcats receiver Jason Caesar lost the ball on a reverse and Smith returned it for a touchdown.

William Griffin scored on a 4-yard run early in the third quarter for the Huskies, capping a nine-play, 80-yard drive.

Northeastern was forced to punt on its next possession, but the Bobcats committed a costly turnover pinned near their goal line. Ray had a pass deflected and it bounced off an Ohio player's foot to Potter, whose short TD return gave Northeastern a 21-0 lead.

Anthony Riley led Northeastern with 86 yards rushing on 11 carries and Griffin added 65 yards on 15 attempts.

Chad Brinker carried 21 times for 93 yards for Ohio. Bobcats left guard Dennis Thompson broke his right leg in the first half. Kevin Kerr missed field goals of 46 and 34 yards.
