Utah 40, Indiana 13

SALT LAKE CITY Marty Johnson was poised to make school history. For at least the next month, though, the Utes must move ahead without him.
Johnson ran for 229 yards in three quarters, the fourth-best total in Utah history, and J.R. Peroulis added 118 more as the Utes beat Indiana 40-13 on Saturday night.
Johnson missed the fourth quarter after spraining a ligament in his right knee. He is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks.
He's a great back, Utah coach Ron McBride said. He could have rushed for well over 300 yards if he didn't go out. Everybody else needs to be ready now to step up.
Indiana (1-1) was the first Big Ten team to play in Salt Lake City, but the Utes (2-0) looked more like the power team. Utah had 386 rushing yards and dictated the tempo on both sides of the ball.
Utah is a big, physical team, said Indiana defensive tackle Kris Dielman. They run it right down your throats like the teams in the Big Ten do.
The Utes dominated the time of possession statistic, keeping the ball for almost 37 of the 60 minutes.
I had a feeling this week the offense was ready to click, McBride said.
Freshman Bryan Borreson kicked four field goals for the Utes, including a 50-yarder early in the fourth quarter that bounced through after hitting the crossbar.
It was the first game at Rice-Eccles Stadium since the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics, as well as Gerry DiNardo's first road game as coach of the Hoosiers.
They really took it to us, DiNardo said. They showed us we have a lot of work to do.
DiNardo's Midwest Coast offense was a flop, delivering a first-quarter touchdown on a trick play and another against the Utah reserves with 31 seconds remaining.
We moved the ball but it was a little late, said reserve quarterback Gibran Hamdan, who played the second half but threw three interceptions, including one by Utah's Cody Weight on fourth down after Indiana had first-and-goal at the 7.
Hamdan completed 17 of 34 passes for 212 yards. Starter Tommy Jones was 4-of-13 for 64 yards, but 53 came on his double-reverse flea-flicker pass to Glenn Johnson for an early 6-3 lead.
Our defense controlled the game, McBride said. They did exactly what we needed them to do. Besides the flea-flicker, they didn't break down for three quarters.
That was the only big play the Utes allowed in the first half. The Utah defense allowed only 79 rushing yards.
We watched film on them and we were excited, said Utah linebacker Sheldon Deckert. We practice against that kind of offense every day. Indiana had big, strong guys, but they're a little overweight. They weren't real quick.
Jones sustained a mild concussion but DiNardo said he had planned to switch to Hamdan for the second half anyway.
Johnson, meanwhile, seemed impossible to stop. He scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and added a 16-yard TD burst in the third, breaking off yardage in big chunks all night. He seemed sure to break Eddie Johnson's 18-year-old school record of 248 yards.
We couldn't tackle him, DiNardo said.
Marty Johnson ran for 111 yards in the second quarter as Utah outscored Indiana 17-0. He had a 2-yard TD run and it was 20-6 at halftime after Lance Rice connected with Paris Jackson on a 5-yard slant pass for a TD.
