Tristate Remembers
Today, the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Tristate will remember with a variety of services and exhibits. Here are some of the events; all are open to the public, and most are free.
Cincinnati
Downtown: Cincinnati City Council asks everyone to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. today, then asks places of worship and other buildings with bells to toll them.
At 10:05 a.m. today, local firefighters will pull their trucks out in front of their stations, stand at attention and sound the air horns. A minute of silence will be observed. At the Firefighters Memorial at Sixth Street and Central Avenue, a 30-minute ceremony begins at 10 a.m.
A Concert of Remembrance is at noon today on Fountain Square. The hourlong program will feature performances by Cincinnati firefighter John Winfrey, the Christ Emmanuel Christian Fellowship Choir, Drums for Peace and the School for Creative and Performing Arts.
One Voice, A Celebration of America will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today on Fountain Square, sponsored by the Lomax Band. Musicians will perform a program of jazz and rhythm and blues in honor of firefighters, police, the Red Cross and Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati Fire Museum, 315 W. Court St., will offer free admission today through Sunday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Friday; noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors are invited to sign the Book of Remembrance, which will be sent to the New York City Fire Museum. Information: 621-5553.
At 7:30 p.m. today, area firefighters, a fire engine and a riderless horse will march from the Northern Kentucky Convention Center to Fountain Square for an 8:15 p.m. ceremony and candlelight vigil.
The Greater Cincinnati Convention and Visitors Bureau will distribute ribbons today at the Visitors Center at Fifth Third Center on Fountain Square.
A reflective program is at 7 p.m. today in the Reading Garden Lounge at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, 800 Vine St.
The Longest Day: Ohio Journalists at Ground Zero, an exhibit of on-the-scene coverage sponsored by the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County in cooperation with the Cincinnati Society of Professional Journalists, will be on display today through Sept. 30 at the Main Library, 800 Vine St. Also at the library through September, Posters 4 Peace will feature selections from more than 700 posters created by people of all ages to express their feelings related to the terrorist attacks and the April 2001 riots in Cincinnati.
Evanston: An interfaith prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. today in Bellarmine Chapel on the campus of Xavier University. Information: 745-3567.
Mount Auburn: People can stop by the William Howard Taft National Historical Site at 2038 Auburn Ave. and pick up an American flag to carry while they view a memorial procession of police, fire and rescue workers along Auburn Avenue at 8:30 a.m. today.
Mount Lookout: A memorial service will begin at 8:30 a.m. today at the flagpole island in Mount Lookout Square.
Mount Washington: A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in the Chapel of St. Gregory the Great at the Athenaeum of Ohio, 6616 Beechmont Ave. Open to the public. Information: 233-6130.
Queensgate: All three museums at the Cincinnati Museum Center, 1301 Western Ave., will offer free admission today. A one-hour ceremony at the center begins at 10 a.m.
University Heights: The University of Cincinnati Campus Ministries Association will sponsor the Clifton Avenue Interfaith Walk for Peace at 10 a.m. today at 3668 Clifton Ave. Information: 861-2929.
Westwood: Catholic Social Services will offer a free workshop, Sept. 11 One Year Later, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today at Mercy HealthPlex Holistic, 3131 Queen City Ave. Information: 241-7745.
Hamilton County
Anderson Township: We Will Remember, sponsored by American Legion Post 318, is at noon today at Veterans Park on Forest Road. Information: 474-3046.
Blue Ash: Sycamore Senior Center, 4455 Carver Woods Drive, will dedicate Freedom Point at 4 p.m. today. A brief ceremony will include a reflection on The Heroes of 9-11. Information: 984-1234.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. today at Blue Ash Veterans Memorial Park, Hunt and Cooper roads. Information: 745-8533.
Cleves: A parade will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday and march through the Cleves business district to Cleves Community Park for a patriotic memorial ceremony. Buses will be provided to take marchers to the parade staging area near Harmony Field.
Delhi Township: A campuswide prayer service will be at 8:30 a.m. today in the College Quad at the College of Mount St. Joseph, 5701 Delhi Road.
Evendale: The Cincinnati Nature Center will waive admission fees to Rowe Woods on Tealtown Road in Milford and Gorman Heritage Farm in Evendale, today through Sunday. Information: 831-1711.
Forest Park: A Memorial Tree Grove dedication ceremony is from 6 to 6:30 p.m. today at Central Park, 1201 W. Kemper Road. A memorial plaque also will be unveiled. Information: 595-5200.
Harrison: Area churches will sponsor a service to honor local firefighters, police, paramedics and the military from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the Performance Arts Center of William Henry Harrison High School, 9860 West Road. Information: 367-1240.
Loveland: A Sept. 11 Remembrance will begin with a procession of safety workers at 9 a.m. today at Castle Skateland, 980 Loveland-Madeira Road, ending at the Loveland Firefighters Memorial in Nisbet Park. Information: 677-7000.
Norwood: Fire apparatus will be assembled in front of the fire station at 9:45 a.m. A ceremony will include ringing of the bell at 10:05 a.m. Information: 458-4550.
Reading: In Remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001 Prayer for Healing and Peace will begin with a community memorial service sponsored by the American Legion Color Guard at Reading City Hall at 6:30 p.m. today.Participants will march to Sts. Peter and Paul Church for an interdenominational prayer service. Information: 554-1010.
Sharonville: A candlelight vigil will take place at 8 p.m. today at Patriot Pointe on Thornview Drive.
Heritage Village Museum at Sharon Woods Park, 11450 Lebanon Road, will be free to all guests during normal business hours of noon to 4 p.m. today.
Butler County
Fairfield: Local firefighters and police officers will recite memorial readings in a ceremony at 7 p.m. today at Village Green Park. Information: 867-5348.
Hamilton: A Leadership Hamilton class will hold a 1 p.m. ceremony today on the plaza in front of the Butler County Government Services Center, 315 High St. A second ceremony will be at 5:15 p.m. on the Second Street side of the Butler County Courthouse.
A short ceremony will take place at 5:15 p.m. today at the Butler County Law Enforcement Memorial on Hanover Street. Police and firefighters will then join in a procession to the Butler County Firefighter Memorial.
Middletown: An Hour of Remembrance will begin at noon today at the base of Casper Memorial Carillon on Donham Plaza. The program is sponsored by American Legion Posts 218 and 579, the city of Middletown and the faith community.
Miami University Middletown, 4200 E. University Blvd., will host a community memorial program at 1:30 p.m. today in Johnston Hall's Hawk Haven.
Oxford: A forum, From the Cold War to the War on Terrorism, will be at 7:30 p.m. today in 100 Laws Hall on the campus of Miami University. A candlelight vigil will take place at 8 p.m. at High and Main streets.
West Chester Township: At Voice of America Park, Tylersville and Cox roads, Sing Out for Peace will begin at 8 p.m. today. The West Chester Symphony, the Seven Hills Show Chorus and an ecumenical choir will perform. Information: 759-7301.
Clermont County
Batavia: Clermont County commissioners will hold a remembrance at 2 p.m. today at the courthouse, 270 E. Main St.
Milford: A remembrance ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. today at the Promont House Museum, 906 Main St. Information: 831-8543.
Richmond: A dedication of a memorial and flags recognizing local firefighting heroes is at 6 p.m. today at the Fire Department on Market Street. Information: 553-4146.
Union Township: The Hindu Society of Greater Cincinnati will perform Shanti Path (Peace Prayer) from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Hindu Temple, 4920 Klatte Road in Summerside. Information: 528-3714.
Northern Kentucky
Boone County
Florence: The Boone County Jaycees and city of Florence will hold a prayer vigil at 7:30 p.m. today at the Florence Government Center, 8100 Ewing Blvd.
Hebron: A service will be held from 9:45 to10:30 a.m. todayat Fire Station 1, 3120 North Bend Road.
Campbell County
Highland Heights: The Disabled American Veterans and Northern Kentucky University will host a ceremony at 11:50 a.m. today on the central plaza of NKU's campus on Nunn Drive.
Newport: Public agencies and groups from around Campbell County will host a service at 10 a.m. today at the World Peace Bell.
Kenton County
Crescent Springs: A candlelight service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Crescent Springs Community Park.
Independence: A memorial service will be held by the American Legion at 9 a.m. today in front of the Kenton County Courthouse, 5272 Madison Pike.
Taylor Mill: A candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Pride Park, 5614 Taylor Mill Road.
