The Michael W. Bany Memorial Scholarship Fund is extending its assistance to working musicians, as well as music students, with a series of mini-scholarships to the MidPoint Music Festival.
The fund, named for the local musician killed in a 1995 robbery, will provide the $50 seminar fee for 40 area musicians to attend the conference portion of the festival Sept. 26-28. Two days of industry seminars are planned at the Millennium Hotel downtown.
The Michael Bany Scholarship Fund wants to keep pace with the pulse of the music scene and not only support scholarships for college students, but also for the working musician who's doing just like Michael was, working in the clubs, said fund spokesman Mickey Foellger, who performed with the late Mr. Bany in the band Wheels.
It's beyond generous, said MidPoint co-founder Sean Rhiney, a local musician who plays in the bands clabbergirl and Pike 27. It shows a whole other aspect of what the Bany Foundation does. Through their tragedy we're given hope to continue on.
Mr. Foellger said the Bany fund plans to provide annual support to MidPoint. This is an exciting new project for Cincinnati, providing a different kind of music education. We believe this is something that's going to stick, something that we can support for years to come.
Musicians may apply for scholarships by e-mailing the fund at bany@mpmf.com, or going to the fest's Web site.
