Prisoner escapes from Jefferson County Jail
The Associated Press
LOUISVILLE - After swapping identification bracelets with another inmate at the Jefferson County Jail, a prisoner being held on theft charges and a fugitive warrant from Louisiana escaped. This was the second such escape in 19 months.
Anthony White, 34, walked out of the jail around 2:15 p.m. Thursday because guards mistook him for Bryant Briggs, 29, said Capt. Terry Green, a corrections spokesman. Mr. White is still at large.
Mr. Green said Mr. Briggs was scheduled to be released Thursday on his own recognizance. He had been charged with arson and being a persistent felony offender.
Mr. Green said the charges against Mr. White included thefts in Kentucky. Mr. Green said he did not know the charges against Mr. White in Louisiana.
Mr. Briggs has been charged with complicity to escape and is being held on a $2,000 bond.
The two prisoners' height and weight are similar, and both have brown hair, mustaches, beards and blue eyes.
Mr. Green said Mr. Briggs was brought to the jail in December, and that Mr. White has been an inmate since Aug. 15.
The incident is the second time in the past 19 months that an inmate has escaped this way.
In February 2001, Kye Carr, 25, being held on assault and firearms charges, traded wristbands with Donteze Hurt, 23, charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, and walked out of the jail.
To prevent such escapes, Mr. Green said, the jail will set up a two-finger identification system. The jail will take the fingerprints of new inmates' index and middle fingers.
