Longer route to Xavier is easier
By Walt Schaefer, wschaefer@enquirer.com

QUESTION: Why is it that when exiting northbound Interstate 71 in Evanston directions to Xavier University tell motorists to turn left to Erie/Dana avenues when a right turn to Montgomery Road is about a mile shorter?
Dieter Schmied,
Avondale
ANSWER: Cincinnati Traffic Engineer Steve Bailey said the route to any major institution that attracts visitors is marked to provide easy and fairly direct access. In this case, the route along Montgomery Road requires a sometimes difficult left turn onto Dana Avenue. The route along Duck Creek Road to Dana, although longer, does not have opposing traffic at two left turns.
Q: Why is there a No Turn On Red sign at the Montgomery Road and Brewster Avenue intersection to southbound Interstate 71 in Evanston?
Nicole Frederick,
Corryville
A: Mr. Bailey said the signal at Montgomery, Brewster and I-71 is operating properly. The signal is timed to turn red for the right turn to I-71 only when there are pedestrians in the crosswalks or when traffic exits Brewster.
Q: The third westbound lane on Columbia Parkway east of Delta Avenue, in Columbia-Tusculum is open only in the mornings until 9:30 a.m. Why isn't the lane open all the time?
Walter C. Frank,
Newtown
A: Mr. Bailey said during the morning rush hour, the outbound left-turning traffic is restricted to turning on the left turn arrow only because the travel lanes through the intersection overlap and left-turning cars could block the extra through lane. At all other times the extra inbound lane must be closed to allow the left-turning traffic to edge into the intersection while it waits for a gap in traffic. No change to this is expected.
