Elderly couple die in crash

An elderly Hyde Park couple died Monday afternoon in a one-car crash on Beechmont Avenue in Mount Washington.

Harry Rei, 86, was pronounced dead at Anderson Mercy Hospital shortly after the 2:55 p.m. crash, police said. His wife, Ellen Rei, 83, a front seat passenger, was pronounced dead at University Hospital shortly after her arrival.

Mr. Rei was driving east in the 6500 block of Beechmont Avenue when the crash occurred, police said. Witnesses said Mr. Rei appeared to slump over the steering wheel before the vehicle went left of center and struck a utility pole on the left side of the road near the intersection of Brachman Avenue .

Neither of the victims was wearing seat belts, police said.

The Cincinnati Police Department's traffic unit is investigating the crash.
