Tour book guide to Oxford

map
OXFORD - If you walk in this Butler County city this fall, you'll see a variety of historic architecture and feel the rhythm of an old college town. To guide you, the Oxford Visitors and Convention Bureau offers a free book, Walking Tour of the Uptown Oxford Historic District.

It features 104 commercial, residential, recreational and religious sites; a map and photographs and advertisements.

The tour starts at the brick Oxford College for Women, built in 1849 at 10 S. College Ave. Originally called the Oxford Female College, it has Federal and Victorian-style architecture with neoclassical elements. A promotional ad from 1899 reads: “Oxford College has a faculty of 25 persons, three of them gentlemen.”

One of my favorite sites is the old Talawanda Theatre, originally called the Oxford Theatre when built at 10 N. Beech St. in 1911. An ad boasts: “The only theatre in America that does not show one second of advertising on the screen.”

In the 1980s, the theater was enlarged and renamed The Princess, which it remains.

Another old theater, the Miami-Western, operated at 36 E. High St. from 1938 to 1988. In 1993, it became First Run, a bar and restaurant. The Miami-Western was a good example of an art deco building in the heart of Oxford.

Not far away from the old theater stands the Jewelry Store Clock, which originally stood on the south side of High Street in the 1880s and was moved to a sidewalk spot in front of Hosack's Jewelry Store in the 1930s.

The clock, obtained by the city in 1979, is a local landmark that is refurbished and ready for the 21st century.

Visitors may pick a pumpkin from the patch, pet animals, buy seasonal produce and baked goods and participate in a quilt raffle. Free parking in the College Hill Presbyterian Church lot.

Pumpkin Patch proceeds will benefit College Hill Gardeners and their efforts to beautify the community, said spokeswoman Beth McLean.

        Information: 681-1326.

HAMILTON - The 4th Hamilton Antiques Fair will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Butler County Fairgrounds on Ohio 4 at Fair Avenue.

        Information: 738-7256.

WAYNESVILLE - Waynesville High School's band will participate in Miami University's Band Day parade at 12:30 p.m. and at half-time festivities about 3 p.m. today in Oxford.

This comes from Supt. Tom Issacs, who may be reached for additional details at goodnewswayne@local.k12.oh.us.

MOUNT CARMEL - Union Township Branch of the Clermont County Public Library will celebrate Deafness Awareness Week by offering a free program in finger spelling and American sign language at 7 p.m. Sept. 24.

The library is at 4462 Mount Carmel-Tobasco Rd.

To pre-register, call the library at 528-1744.
