Obituary; Robert J. Engelhardt, pharmacist

Instructor at UC, ran Bernens drugstore

By Karen Andrew
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Pharmacist Robert J. Engelhardt died Wednesday at Western Hills Racquet Club while playing tennis with his longtime friend Bob Sahnd. Mr. Engelhardt, of Delhi Township, was 58.

“He was very generous and a good businessman,” said Mr. Sahnd.

Kenn Peterson, a neighbor, described Mr. Engelhardt as a wonderful family man. “I was really always impressed with him as a father — he was my mentor as a father,” he said. “If you look at any of his children, it speaks volumes about what a good father he was.”

Mr. Engelhardt's daughter Ann Marie of Westwood said her father ran his pharmacy, Bernens Medical and Pharmacy in Price Hill, as a corner drugstore where people felt comfortable asking for advice. “Everybody trusted him. He saved 10 or 12 people after taking their blood pressure or whatever and sent them to the hospital.”

She added that as a nurse, she often consulted with her father and every once in a while he would say, “Well, we saved another one, Ann.”

Born in Cincinnati in 1943, Mr. Engelhardt graduated from Elder High School in 1961 and University of Cincinnati's College of Pharmacy in 1966. He began working at Bernens in 1963 and purchased the business in 1990.

Mr. Engelhardt met his wife, Mary Babey, in the donut shop where she worked, next to Bernens. They were married in 1965.

He was one of the founders and presidents of Midwest Pharmacy Providers, a buying group of local independent pharmacies, and a clinical pharmacy instructor at UC's College of Pharmacy for more than 20 years.

In addition to his wife, Mary, and daughter Ann Marie, survivors include his daughters Amy Spera of Wyoming, Holly Engelhardt-Gillock of Prospect Hill and Kate Engelhardt of Delhi; son, Robert Jr. of Delhi; sisters, Mary Lang and Arlene Coffaro, both of Delhi; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Corbin.

        Services have been held.

Memorials may be made to Our Daily Bread, 1730 Race St., Cincinnati, OH 45202-6418.Mr. Engelhardt
