West Nile virus kills Ky. woman
By The Associated Press
OWENSBORO, Ky. - A Daviess County woman has died after contracting the West Nile virus, state health officials say.
The latest case brings a total of 4 deaths in Kentucky attributed to the virus, which is transmitted by mosquito bites.
Margaret Martin King, 87, of Owensboro, died at Owensboro Mercy Health System last Sunday. She was buried Wednesday.
Lamone Mayfield, executive director of the Green River District Health Department, told the Messenger-Inquirer in Owensboro on Friday that the woman had died of the West Nile virus. Ms. Mayfield said more information would be released next week.
People shouldn't panic, Ms. Mayfield said. This was an elderly woman; it happens to people who have weak immune systems.
Only about one in 150 cases produces symptoms serious enough for most people to seek medical care.
