October provides bountiful harvest for local film fans

        Boosters of the local film scene will have a banquet of choices in October:

        The second Cincinnati International Film Festival gets under way Oct. 3 with an opening reception at the 20th Century, 3021 Madison Road, Oakley. Tickets are $50; call 379-6462. Among highlights:

        On Oct. 4, filmmaker James Toback is scheduled to show his movie Harvard Man at 7:30 p.m. at the Esquire, 320 Ludlow Ave., Clifton, and take part in a discussion after the movie. The movie will repeat Oct. 7 at 9 p.m.

        On Oct. 5, Mr. Toback is scheduled to lead a filmmaking workshop from 1-4 p.m. in the Rosewood Room of the Hilton Netherland Plaza. Admission is $50; call 379-6462.

        On Oct. 6, the program calls for filmmaker Tom Curran to present his documentary Adrift at the Aronoff Center's Jarson-Kaplan Theater, 650 Walnut St., downtown, at 6 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the box office.

        On Oct. 5, the Kevin Kline drama The Emperor's Club, due to open nationwide Nov. 22, will screen at 5:30 p.m. at the Esquire, and on Oct. 8, the Ohio-based feature The Year That Trembled, about the Kent State tragedy, will screen at 7:30 p.m. at the Esquire. Tickets for each are $8 at the box office.

        On Oct. 10, short films by local filmmakers Bryan Amburgy and Chuck Swanson will precede a screening of the Tyrone Power film Blood & Sand. On Oct. 11, a closing gala at the Hilton Netherland Plaza will salute the career of the late Mr. Power, a Cincinnati native. Tickets are $125; call 379-6462.

        A new film showcase called the Queen City Film Festival launches in October. Under the umbrella of the Cincinnati International Film Festival, it will show short works by Tristate film and video makers. Submissions of 15 minutes or less on VHS can be sent to P.O. Box 498828, Cincinnati 45249; fee is $10 per entry. Deadline is Sept. 30. Selected works will be shown at the 20th Century at a date to be determined.

        On Oct. 4, the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Film Commission holds its annual fund-raiser at Old St. George, 42 Calhoun St., Clifton. The event opens at 7 p.m. with an auction and cocktails, with dinner at 8:30 p.m., followed by dancing to Leroy Ellington and the E-Funk Band. Tickets are $125 ($75 is tax deductible).
