By Nicole Hamilton, nhamilton@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

At wedding receptions, people would stand in line for a chance to dance with the former mayor of Silverton, Clement F. Luck.

“He decided to ask my mom on a second date because she didn't try to lead,” said his daughter, Mary Jo Hopewell of Mount Carmel.

Mr. Luck died Sept. 8 at East Galbraith Health Center of heart failure. The longtime Silverton resident was 94.

A Republican, Mr. Luck became a Silverton city councilman in 1950.

He replaced William Carmichael as mayor in June 1963 when Mr. Carmichael died.

Mr. Luck was elected to two more terms. During his tenure he was responsible for bringing more businesses to Montgomery Road.

Mr. Luck retired from office in December 1967.

Born in Covington, Mr. Luck moved with his mother and sister to Clifton in 1918 after his father died during a flu epidemic.

He attended St. George School in Clifton, then worked to support his family by day and took business classes at the University of Cincinnati by night.

In the late 1930s he accepted a position as a credit manager for Dana Coal Co., then located in Norwood.

He served as president of the Coke & Coal Manufacturers Association in the 1960s.

Mr. Luck retired from the coal company in 1973.

He remained active with St. John the Evangelist Church in Deer Park, where he founded the

Dads Club and sang in the church choir. Ms. Hopewell said the priest called her father the “oldest living altar boy.”His wife of 57 years, Edith C. Luck, died in 1991.

Survivors include two other daughters, Patricia Braunwart of Taylor Mill and Rita Deimling of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sons, David of Sycamore Township, C. Thomas of Deer Park and Robert of Blue Ash; a sister, Cecilia Meyer of Latonia; 29 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services have been held. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Montgomery.

Memorials: Dads Club, St. John the Evangelist Church, 7121 Plainfield Road, Cincinnati OH 45236.
