Shawn William Ernst (left) and his attorney, Bill Spicer, listen as Commonwealth Attorney Linda Tally Smith argues Monday in Boone Circuit Court that he should be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Mr. Ernst, 30, was convicted of the April 2000 kidnapping and murder of his landlady, Sandra Roberts, 59, of Florence. Authorities say an argument over a $145 phone bill led to Ms. Roberts' murder. District Judge Charles Moore agreed with the prosecutor.
