        TV pick: Lots of tough choices, on the first Sunday of the TV season: Premieres for NBC's American Dreams (8 p.m., Channels 5, 22) and Boomtown (10 p.m.); the return of ABC's Alias (9 p.m., Channels 9, 2) and The Practice (10 p.m.); and ABC's Prince William docudrama (7 p.m., Channels 9, 2).

        Critic John Kiesewetter also says Garry Shandling's old HBO talk show satire, The Larry Sanders Show, now airs twice on Sunday (10 and 10:30 p.m., Channel 25).

Planning ahead
