Lawrenceburg man shot to death

WEST HARRISON, Ind. -- Franklin County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a domestic disturbance Saturday morning that led to the shooting death of a Lawrenceburg man.

Police said Robert Ballard, 62, of the 3100 block of New Trenton Road, West Harrison, got into an argument with Billy D. Smith Jr., 28, of the 3300 block of Sneakville Road, Lawrenceburg, at Mr. Ballard's home.

Franklin County Sheriff deputies responded to a 911 call at 11:37 a.m. reporting a shooting at Mr. Ballard's home. When they arrived, they said, they found Mr. Smith laying in the front yard with a gunshot wound to the abdominal area. Mr. Ballard was standing nearby.

Mr. Smith, police said, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Franklin County Coroner. Police found a small handgun at the scene and Mr. Ballard was arrested and charged with murder.

He remains in custody at the Franklin County Security Center as the police investigation continues.
