Prize Possessions: Elvis memorabilia
By Marsie Hall Newbold
Enquirer contributor
Who: Beverly Norris, 58, of College Corner, a program associate at Miami University Art Museum and collector of Elvis memorabilia.
On display: More than 200 items in the Elvis room of the home she shares with her husband, Dale.
The Elvis room was originally half of our L-shaped living room, Mrs. Norris says. It's huge and has white rope lights on top.
Treasure-trove: Mrs. Norris' Elvis collection includes everything from a bingo dauber to her pride and joy, a life-sized ceramic sculpture of the King with a real guitar. It was a surprise gift from her husband.
I screamed bloody murder when he gave it to me! she giggles.
Hunk a hunk a lots o' stuff: Other artifacts include Graceland tour tickets, a queen-sized quilt, a pink Cadillac pin, postage stamps (from 29 cents to a dollar), busts and velvet paintings. She also owns record albums, 45-rpm records, CDs, VHS tapes of his movies, lottery tickets, key chains, books, afghans, license plates and teddy bears that sing Hound Dog and Teddy Bear when you press their Taking Care of Business belt buckles.
She has been to Graceland once and even toured Elvis' private plane, the Lisa Marie.
Sound mind: Mrs. Norris even has a copy of Mr. Presley's last will and testament. She admits that he didn't leave her anything. But she's not holding that against his memory.
I didn't start collecting Elvis things until he was deceased, she says. I had known who he was and listened to him. We danced to his songs at sock hops. I had even watched him on Ed Sullivan. Something just stirred up an interest.
On the lookout: Now she searches yard sales, flea markets and gift shops for Elvis items whenever she gets an opportunity. Besides her husband, their two grown children and five grandchildren add to the collection whenever they get a chance.
My kids think I'm crazy! she chuckles. My daughter said: "We're going to just have to start pitching stuff out the window!' But I think they like it because they are the ones who give me Elvis things.
Mrs. Norris' only regret is not seeing Mr. Presley live in concert.
But I'll always have his music, she says. He was just wonderful. There will never be another like him.
See for youself: Part of Mrs. Norris' collection will be on display through next Sunday as part of the Thirty Years of Rock "n' Roll exhibition at Miami University Art Museum on Patterson Avenue in Oxford. Telephone: (513) 529-2232. There is no charge. Hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, noon- 5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
