Glider flight to honor Wrights
DAYTON, Ohio - A replica of the Wright brothers' 1902 glider is scheduled to be flown Tuesday in Kitty Hawk, N.C., to mark the 100th anniversary of the original glider's flights.
The nonprofit Wright Brothers Aeroplane Co., headed by Nick Engler of suburban West Milton, built the replica.
Mr. Engler and his team have been joined by an aviator from the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier and an Air Force pilot who hope to make commemorative flights
on the dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park, a popular hang-gliding spot a few miles south of the Wright Brothers National Memorial.
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Klas Ohman and Air Force Capt. James Alexander each made three practice flights Friday.
It took flight very quickly, Cmdr. Ohman said.
He said he managed some glides of more than 200 feet.
Mr. Engler picked Oct. 8 to mark the centennial of controlled flight because that was when Orville and Wilbur Wright began flying their 1902 glider with the addition of a steerable rudder. The modified rudder gave them the control Wilbur Wright had identified as the key to flight.
