Pharmacies pull cold remedy off shelves
COLUMBUS, Ind. - Some Indiana pharmacies have taken a popular cold remedy off the shelves and placed it behind the counter or inside locked cabinets after authorities warned the medication is being abused.
Police are concerned that Coricidin HBP Cold and Cough is becoming popular as a recreational drug, particularly among teens.
Although the problem is new to Indiana, abuse and deaths have been reported in other states, including California, Michigan and Ohio.
Authorities say teen drug abusers have often sought over-the-counter medicines, including cough syrup and cold remedies, because they are inexpensive and easy to purchase.
Coricidin HBP Cough and Cold, so named because it is formulated for people with high blood pressure, is one of the latest to be added to the list.
Although different types of Coricidin are available with other ingredients, the cough-and-cold formula has a particular mix that is dangerous in high doses. By taking several pills, users experience a hallucinogenic high, police said.
Overdosing can also result in dizziness, nausea, hot flashes, slurred speech, tremors and seizures.Compiled from staff and wire reportsGoodall
