Antiques of interest


Show has something for everyone, and it's for a good cause

No matter your favorites, there's a selection to suit beginners to dedicated collectors at the 2002 Cincinnati Antiques Festival Friday through Oct. 20 at the Sharonville Convention Center.

And the buying and selling benefits a worthy cause: Project SEARCH, a program of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center that trains people with disabilities for jobs in health care.

More than 40 antiques dealers from more than 21 states will be displaying their finest, including porcelain, brass, fine art, prints, silver and decorative accessories, in room-like settings. Greater Cincinnati dealers taking part in the show are Grosvenor Brant Antiques, Hyde Park; Drackett Antiques, Montgomery; Cincinnati Art Galleries, downtown, and Mongenas Antiques, Loveland.

Festival activities

Lectures: Antique experts and authors Sheila Chefetz and Leslie Hindman will speak. Ms. Chefetz will talk about “The Decorative Arts of Dining” at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday.($35 includes box lunch and admission). Ms. Hindman will present “Ten Criteria for Collecting - What Determines the Value of an Item” at 10 a.m. next Saturday. ($24 including admission and light refreshments). Reservations are required: 561-0950.

Appraisals: Verbal appraisals will be given for two antiques per person for $5 each at 3:30 p.m. next Saturday.

Bid and buy: The Sealed Bid Booth, open until 3 p.m.Oct. 20, promises a selection of donated furniture, silver, crystal, painting and rugs, including an early 19th century Hepplewhite mahogany bow-front chest, An English pine chest (circa 1850) painted for a wedding chest in 1913, an 87-piece tea set and several pieces of 18th century Chinese export porcelain. Successful bidders will be notified the night of Oct. 20. The booth will be in Room 108 on Level 1.
