Lombardi Award to Cooksey
Jockey to be feted Nov. 2
The Enquirer and wire reports
Jockey Patricia Cooksey will be honored with the Lombardi Symbol of Courage Award on Nov. 2 in Washington, D.C.
The honor is bestowed each year on a sportsperson who has faced cancer and who possesses the inspirational qualities of the late Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins coach Vince Lombardi. Cooksey overcame breast cancer and returned to race-riding in Kentucky and Ohio.
Cooksey will join past winners that include four-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong; Joe Torre, manager of the World Champion New York Yankees; Olympic gold medalist and world champion figure skater Scott Hamilton, and St. Louis Cardinals and former Reds outfielder Eric Davis.
"I'm overwhelmed," Cooksey told the Thoroughbred Times. "Not bad for a farm girl from Ohio. Tough part is working on an acceptance speech. I don't want to make jockeys look bad."
KEENELAND: Riskaverse, ridden by Mark Guidry, wore down British invader Zenda to win the $500,000 Grade I Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup.
Riskaverse, who won her fifth race in 12 career starts, ran the 1 1/8 mile in 1:49.84.
REPENT OUT OF BC: Select Stable's Repent will not run in the Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 26 at Arlington Park because of a tendon injury in his left front leg, trainer Ken McPeek announced.
