COLUMBUS, Ohio - Daniel Briere assisted on two of Phoenix's three power-play goals as the Coyotes beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 Monday night. The game set Columbus records for most penalties by the Blue Jackets (15), an opponent (19) and combined penalty minutes (108).
The Coyotes converted just 2 of 13 power-play chances in losing their first two games this season, but scored on two of their first three opportunities against Columbus.
Ladislav Nagy, Shane Doan and Paul Mara had power-play goals. Landon Wilson also scored.
Phoenix finished 3-of-9 on the power play, and Columbus was 1 for 11.
Brian Boucher made 30 saves for the Coyotes.
Penguins 5, Maple Leafs 4 TORONTO - Mario Lemieux scored twice and assisted on Aleksey Morozov's two power-play goals as Pittsburgh avenged its worst opening-game loss by beating Toronto.
Lemieux scored the game-winner on the power play with 2:18 left. Morozov also had two assists for the Penguins, who have won two straight following Thursday's 6-0 home loss to Toronto.
Tie Domi, Mats Sundin, Darcy Tucker and Alexander Mogilny scored power-play goals for the Maple Leafs, who have lost two straight.
Mogilny appeared to score the tying goal with 24 seconds remaining, but it was taken away after it was ruled that the net was off its moorings before the puck went in.
Bruins 2, Avalanche 1 DENVER - Sergei Samsonov scored a power-play goal with just a half-second left, lifting Boston past Colorado.
Boston scored on its 17th power-play shot of the night after Milan Hejduk was penalized for pulling down P.J. Axelsson on a partial breakaway at 19:15.
Bruins goalie John Grahame made 24 saves, and Colorado's Patrick Roy had 35.
Despite being outshot 12-6 in the first period, the Avalanche led 1-0 on Martin Skoula's power-play goal at 7:00.
Martin Lapointe tied it with a power-play goal at 10:50 of the second.
Flames 3, Canucks 2 VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Rookie Chuck Kobasew scored with 4:38 left Monday night as the Calgary Flames rallied from a two-goal deficit and beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 for their first victory of the season.
Kobasew's shot from the slot went off the blocker of Dan Cloutier and bounced in off of Vancouver defenseman Ed Jovanovski, who was tied up with Marc Savard driving to the net.
Craig Conroy and Micki Dupont, with his first NHL point, also scored for the Flames (1-2).
Brendan Morrison and Brent Sopel scored for the Canucks, who were trying for just the fourth 3-0 start in their 33-year history.
Vancouver, which beat the Flames 3-0 in their season opener last Thursday, took a 2-0 lead in the second period before the Flames answered with two quick goals.
Morrison opened the scoring on the power play just 26 seconds into the second, and Sopel's slap shot made it 2-0 at 7:06.
But Cloutier's shutout streak against the Flames ended when Conroy and Dupont scored 41 seconds apart to tie it before the second period ended.
Calgary's top line of Conroy, Jarome Iginla, and Martin Gelinas dominated down low against Vancouver's top line for a full shift before Conroy batted Gelinas pass out of the air and between Cloutier's legs at 12:49.
Dupont's point shot went in off the post behind a screened Cloutier to tie it on the next shift.
Calgary's Roman Turek, who finished with 23 saves, was also good, stopping Trevor Letwoski one-on-one in close late in the third. He then sprawled during an ensuing scramble to keep the puck out of the net while lying on his back.
Vancouver extended its season-long penalty-killing streak to 16 straight thanks in large part to Cloutier, who made a large percentage of his 29 saves during six Calgary power plays. He stopped Iginla on a breakaway early in the second, then again from the slot. He also robbed Chris Drury late in the period.
Notes: The two teams have played four times in 24 days, including exhibition games, with the Canucks winning the first three by a combined score of 13-2. ... Vancouver forwards Trevor Linden and Jan Hlavac missed a second straight game with knee injuries. ... Savard was back in the lineup after sitting out the last game, but C Rob Niedermayer took his place as a healthy scratch. ... Rookie Calgary D Jordan Leopold, who won the Hobey Baker as the most outstanding college player last year, skated the last two days for the first time since sustaining a concussion Oct. 4.
