Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals in Mason will eliminate up to 50 jobs to increase productivity in its Discovery Research Group, the company confirmed Wednesday.
The unit, which focuses on drug research that is "upstream," or not yet ready for commercialization, will reduce research on anti-infective products, a spokeswoman said.
Pharmaceuticals president Mark Collar told employees about the changes in a meeting Tuesday. Affected employees will have a chance at other P&G job opportunities, the company said.
The savings can be used to accelerate research for active projects including the Intrinsa female testosterone patch, and for new ventures such as an investment in a Florida biotech company with a potential treatment for diabetes.
"You need money to be able to react quickly and bring those things in," spokeswoman Ellen Bowman said.
