DEERFIELD TWP. - Kings High School has canceled its volleyball and soccer matches with Cincinnati Country Day School for next year - an action that comes after allegations that a racial slur was made to a CCD soccer player.
Kings Local School District conducted an internal investigation into allegations that a Kings female soccer player directed a racial slur toward the CCD goalkeeper, an African-American, during a Sept. 9 game. But there was no confirmation that the incident happened, district spokeswoman Beth Wagner said.
The allegation "may have added something to that, but it's not the reason (games) were canceled." She said the decision was based on scheduling conflicts and because CCD is not in the Kings league.
Kings Athletic Director Matthew Koenig refused to comment on the situation Thursday, and directed all questions to Ms. Wagner.
"After much discussion with the parties involved, the issue is no longer a matter that requires any additional discussion on my part," said Kings Superintendent David Query. "There's been a great deal of discussion between the schools, the principals, the coaches and the athletic directors. The issue, from our perspective, has been appropriately handled."
Ms. Wagner was not sure if the teams would play in future. The decision to cancel volleyball and boys and girls soccer was made this month. Kings is not scheduled to play CCD in other sports.
