Top 25 roundup

The Associated Press

AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn's offense made the big plays when it needed them most. The defense dominated and forced five turnovers.

In other words, Auburn did to Louisiana State what LSU had been doing to just about everyone else this season.

Ronnie Brown ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns in place of injured tailback Carnell Williams as Auburn beat No.10 LSU 31-7 on Saturday.

Auburn's performance featured everything the Tigers (5-3, 3-2 SEC) had failed to do in their previous two games, when they gave up 68 combined points in losses to Arkansas and Florida.

"We played great all four quarters, made the big plays and got some key turnovers. It was the best effort since I've been here, on both sides of the ball," Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said.

LSU's Tigers (6-2, 3-1) managed just 242 total yards.

Quarterback Marcus Randall threw four interceptions - including three in his first five passes - and completed just nine of 20 for 79 yards.

"We turned the ball over too many times to be successful," LSU coach Nick Saban said. "We never had good field position, and that really hurt us."

No. 1 Miami 40, West Virginia 23

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Ken Dorsey threw for a career-high 422 yards and two touchdowns, and Willis McGahee ran for 112 yards and three TDs as the Hurricanes (7-0, 3-0 Big East) extended the nation's longest winning streak to 29.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Bryan Randall's 32-yard touchdown pass to Doug Easlick on the last play of the third quarter lifted the Hokies (8-0, 3-0 Big East), who had trouble running the ball.

The Owls (3-5, 1-2) packed the line on defense, making the going tough for Hokies halfbacks Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones. Suggs gained 47 yards on 19 carries, and Jones had 72 yards on 17 attempts.

No. 7 Texas 21, No. 17 Iowa State 10

AUSTIN, Texas - Cedric Benson ran for 199 yards and two TDs, and the Longhorns (7-1, 3-1 Big 12) contained Cyclones quarterback Seneca Wallace in winning their 17th straight at home.

The Longhors held the Cyclones (6-3, 3-2) to 286 yards.

No. 15 Southern Cal 44, No. 14 Oregon 33

EUGENE, Ore. - Carson Palmer threw for 448 yards and matched a school record with five touchdown passes as the Trojans (6-2, 4-1 Pac-10) handed the Ducks (6-2, 2-2) their second consecutive loss.

Palmer's five touchdown passes tied Rodney Peete's mark in 1987 against Stanford. Palmer completed 31 of 42 attempts with one interception.

No. 19 Alabama 34, No. 16 Tennessee 14

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Santonio Beard ran for two touchdowns and Alabama took advantage of six turnovers to beat Tennessee, ending a seven-game losing streak to the Volunteers.
