EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - John Madden scored twice and set up another and the goal-starved New Jersey Devils knocked the surprising Tampa Bay Lightning from the unbeaten ranks with a 5-1 victory on Saturday night.

Joe Nieuwendyk, Patrik Elias and Stephen Guolla also scored as the Devils had their biggest offensive night of the season in winning their third straight game and for the sixth time in seven.

Martin Brodeur allowed only a third-period goal by Chris Dingman in recording his league-best sixth win.

Entering as the NHL's last unbeaten team at 5-0-2, the Lightning gave goalie Nikolai Khabibulin his first night off. The loss ended Tampa Bay's franchise record eight-game unbeaten streak, which included the final game of last season.

Kevin Hodson, playing in a regular-season game for the first time since an 8-0 loss to San Jose on Feb. 8, 2000, had little help as the Devils outshot Tampa Bay 13-5 in taking a 2-0 first-period lead.

Rangers 4, Maple Leafs 3

TORONTO - Pavel Bure scored with 57 seconds left, and Mike Richter made 36 saves in New York's victory over Toronto.

Mikael Samuelsson tied it at 3 with 5:44 left to help the Rangers snap a five-game winless streak. The Maple Leafs, booed as the final buzzer sounded, have won just two of their nine games.

Mark Messier and Petr Nedved also scored for New York. Mikael Renberg, Alexander Mogilny and Tie Domi scored for Toronto.

Canadiens 5, Senators 3

MONTREAL - Jeff Hackett made 45 saves and Yanic Perreault scored twice to lead Montreal over Ottawa.

Craig Rivet, Richard Zednik and Patrice Brisebois scored for Montreal, which got its first home win in five games despite being outshot 48-21.

Hackett, who took over for league MVP Jose Theodore midway through Thursday's 6-2 loss in Philadelphia, remained undefeated in three starts this season.

Martin Havlat, Daniel Alfredsson and Wade Redden scored for Ottawa, which trailed 1-0 after the first despite outshooting Montreal 23-5 in the period.

Blackhawks 3, Hurricanes 3

RALEIGH, N.C. - Boris Mironov scored with 12:28 left in the third period to cap Chicago's two-goal comeback in a tie with Carolina.

Kevin Weekes stopped 40 of Chicago's 43 shots.

Carolina was able to kill off consecutive penalties to Sean Hill and Bret Hedican over the final five minutes of regulation.

Rod Brind'Amour had a goal and an assist and Jeff O'Neill extended his point streak to a career-high eight games with a goal for Carolina.

O'Neill and Brind'Amour scored power-play goals less than 7 minutes apart in the second period to break a 1-1 tie.

The Blackhawks closed to 3-2 on Phil Housley's 334th career goal.

Bruins 4, Thrashers 3

BOSTON - Brian Rolston scored his second goal of the third period on a power play with 25.3 seconds remaining in Boston's victory against winless Atlanta.

Joe Thornton and Marty McInnis also scored for the Bruins, whose victory extended their unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2) since a 5-1 opening night loss at Minnesota.

Ilya Kovalchuk, Tony Hrkac and Daniel Tjarnqvist scored for Atlanta, which suffered its fourth straight one-goal loss, fell to 0-7-0-1 and remained the Eastern Conference's only winless team.

Steve Shields made 28 saves and improved to 3-0-2 for Boston.

Flyers 6, Islanders 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Michal Handzus and Jeremy Roenick each had two goals, and Philadelphia scored twice in the opening minute en route to a win over New York.

Justin Williams and Keith Primeau also scored for the Flyers, who are 5-1-2 under new coach Ken Hitchcock. Robert Esche won his second game of the season by making 22 saves.

Brad Isbister scored both Islanders goals. Chris Osgood started in goal and stopped only six Philadelphia shots. Garth Snow relieved and made 14 saves.

The Islanders fell behind 2-0 just 31 seconds in as Osgood was beaten by the first two Philadelphia shots. It was the two fastest goals scored against the Islanders at the start of a game and the third fastest in NHL history.

Panthers 1, Capitals 1

SUNRISE, Fla. - Roberto Luongo made 35 saves, including seven in overtime, leading Florida to a tie with Washington.

The only shot to beat Luongo deflected in off the stick of teammate Ivan Majesky in the second period.

Florida took a 1-0 lead on Ivan Novoseltsev's goal, scored from in front of the crease.

The Capitals tied it in the second period when Majesky tried to push the puck away from the crease, but it glanced off his stick and went in. Robert Lang was credited with the goal.

Predators 3, Red Wings 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Andreas Johansson had two goals and an assist as Nashville won its first game of the season by beating Stanley Cup champion Detroit.

Johansson scored his first goal at 3:39 of the first period as he skated down the slot and backhanded a shot over the left shoulder of Detroit goalie Curtis Joseph.

The Red Wings answered quickly when Nicklas Lidstrom scored from the left circle on a perfect pass from Igor Larionov against Nashville's Mike Dunham at 5:22.

But just over a minute later, Adam Hall scored off an assist by Johansson, who scored again at 10:05.

Penguins 5, Sabres 2

PITTSBURGH - Alexandre Daigle scored one goal and set up another as Pittsburgh scored four unanswered power-play goals in a victory over Buffalo.

Daigle, back this season after a two-year retirement, scored his first goal since March 3, 2000, at 16:23 of the first period to put the Penguins ahead 2-1.

He set up Michal Rozsival's power-play goal at 12:08 of the second period to make it 4-1.

The Sabres, who entered as the league's second-most penalized team,

Aleksey Morozov and Alexei Kovalev scored their seventh goals of the season for Pittsburgh and NHL scoring leader Mario Lemieux added two assists to give him 18 points in eight games.

Buffalo is 1-4-1 since opening the season with two victories.

Oilers 4, Mighty Ducks 3

EDMONTON, Alberta - Brian Swanson had a goal and two assists as Edmonton rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to beat Anaheim.

Jason Chimera, Eric Brewer and Mike Comrie also scored for the Oilers, who ended a five-game winless skid (0-4-1).

Petr Sykora scored twice, Mike Leclerc had a goal and Steve Rucchin had three assists for the Mighty Ducks, whose unbeaten streak was stopped at three games.

Edmonton has won seven straight at home against Anaheim dating to a 2-1 loss on Feb. 24, 1999. The Oilers also won their first game at home this season.

Blues 4, Flames 3, OT

CALGARY, Alberta - Rookie Eric Boguniecki scored 4:35 into overtime Saturday night, lifting St. Louis over Calgary.

Former Flames player Cory Stillman scored twice for the Blues, and Doug Weight added the other as St. Louis won its sixth game in a row. Weight added two assists.

Blues goalie Fred Brathwaite returned from a groin injury to stop 18 shots for his first win of the season.

Jordan Leopold with his first NHL goal, Martin Gelinas, and Chris Clark scored for Calgary. The Flames are winless in five games at home (0-2-2-1) and have blown a third period lead in three of those games, including this one.

Stars 4, Canucks 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Brendan Morrow scored twice in the third period to lead Dallas past Vancouver.

Mike Modano scored shorthanded into an empty net with 1:09 left. Jere Lehtinen also scored, and Marty Turco made several spectacular stops among his 27 saves as Dallas extended its unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1).

Todd Bertuzzi ended a five-game power-play slump for the Canucks, who have just one win in their last seven games (1-3-3).

Wild 6, Coyotes 1

PHOENIX - Marian Gaborik scored two goals and assisted on the other four Minnesota goals as the Wild won their third straight game by beating struggling Phoenix.

Andrew Brunette added two goals for the Wild, who won the first time ever in Phoenix, and Manny Fernandez made 39 saves to improve to 5-0.

The Coyotes lost their second consecutive game and are 0-3 at home this season.

Gaborik scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season, breaking the 3-year-old franchise's record for points in a game (5) in just two periods.

Mike Johnson scored a power-play goal for Phoenix.
