BCS contenders agree: Winning is the only thing
The Associated Press
ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia can win every game and it still might not be enough.
Ditto for Notre Dame, Ohio State, Miami, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma - all trying to finish the season unbeaten and hoping the complicated BCS formula works in their favor.
With six unbeaten teams atop the Bowl Championship Series standings and only two spots available in the Fiesta Bowl - the supposed national title game - college football heads into the final month of the regular season facing the possibility of one big mess.
Take No.5 Georgia, which could go 13-0 and not get a chance to play in Tempe, Ariz., on Jan.3.
"I don't think it would be fair for anybody to go undefeated and not be in the national championship game," quarterback David Greene said.
It could happen to as many as three teams. No.1 Miami (7-0) and No.3 Virginia Tech (8-0) play each other Dec.7, which will effectively eliminate one of the contenders.
But No.2 Oklahoma (7-0), No.4 Notre Dame (8-0), Georgia (8-0) and No.6 Ohio State (9-0) all are in position to finish with perfect records. Of course, only two teams will be playing Jan.3.
"It would be tough (to miss out)," Miami tight end Eric Winston said. "I just hope it's not us."
The BCS rankings - a formula that considers a team's record, the media and coaches' polls, computer rankings, strength of schedule and quality wins - will determine the Fiesta Bowl matchup.
If one or more unbeaten teams gets left out, there surely will be plenty of whining and renewed calls for a new system.
"I think a playoff would be good," Georgia receiver Terrence Edwards said. "That way, you can prove who's best on the field."
This week, the top six in the BCS are Oklahoma, Miami, Notre Dame, Georgia, Ohio State and Virginia Tech.
Notre Dame is boosted by a strong schedule and high placing in the computer rankings, but there's still a possibility the Fighting Irish will get left out.
"Wouldn't that be a nightmare?" Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said after his team was routed by Notre Dame last week. "They'd have a playoff in Rome."
For now, everyone has to keep an eye on the teams they've already beaten and the ones still ahead on the schedule. Georgia, for instance, faces the uncomfortable position of pulling for rival Georgia Tech, which can enhance the Bulldogs' strength of schedule by finishing strong.
Ohio State was hurt last week when its biggest rival, Michigan, was routed by Iowa. The Buckeyes play Michigan in the season finale, but they don't get a crack at the Hawkeyes this season.
No one wants to get caught looking ahead. Georgia travels to Jacksonville on Saturday to meet Florida, which isn't ranked by the Associated Press but has beaten the Bulldogs 11 of the past 12 years.
Lose again, and Georgia can forget about a national championship.
"Basically, I told my team that the BCS doesn't mean a hill of beans right now," coach Mark Richt said. "When it comes to the BCS, you've got to win every single game."
Notre Dame would appear to have the clearest path to an unbeaten season. The Irish will be heavy favorites against Boston College, Navy and Rutgers but must close the season at No.11 Southern California.
Ohio State is in good shape, too. Minnesota (7-1) has a lofty record but hasn't beaten anyone of significance. Purdue and Illinois both have losing records, and the Buckeyes get Michigan at home.
Virginia Tech shouldn't be tested until it visits Miami in early December, whereas the Hurricanes must survive a trip to Tennessee on Nov.9 if they want to be unbeaten going into the showdown with the Hokies.
Miami, the defending national champion, is ranked No.1 in both polls but is barely ahead of Notre Dame in the BCS.
Two years ago, the Hurricanes beat Florida State but finished behind the Seminoles in the BCS rankings, costing them a chance to play Oklahoma for the national title in the Orange Bowl.
