Ohio State reserve arrested

The Associated Press

COLUMBUS - A reserve long snapper on the Ohio State football team is charged with felonious assault for allegedly beating up a man.

Kurt Wilhelm, 20, a sophomore, has surrendered to police. He is the younger brother of OSU linebacker Matt Wilhelm.

A university official said coach Jim Tressel had been aware of the incident Saturday, which is why Kurt Wilhelm did not dress for the game against Penn State. But the official said the university was still looking into the details of what happened.

LOMBARDI FINALISTS: Three players from top-ranked Miami are among the 12 semifinalists for the Lombardi Award, given annually to the top college lineman.

The three Hurricanes are William Joseph, Jerome McDougle and center Brett Romberg. Notre Dame center Jeff Faine also is a finalist.

FLORIDA STATE: Adrian McPherson will be one of the most watched players in the country Saturday when he makes his first start for Florida State. The former "Mr. Football" and "Mr. Basketball" in Florida takes over at quarterback for Chris Rix when the 18th-ranked Seminoles visit Wake Forest.

It's the first time in 12 seasons Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has changed quarterbacks for any reason other than an injury. The Seminoles have lost two games in a row; they haven't lost three straight since 1983.

The 19-year-old McPherson said the coaches have promised they'd be patient. "They're going to take as long as they have to with me," McPherson said.

QUICK STAT: Tyrone Willingham on Saturday could join Ara Parseghian (1964) and Jesse Harper (1913-14) by going 9-0 in his first nine games as Notre Dame coach.
