SuperSonics 106, Warriors 93

Peyton propels Sonics

OAKLAND, Calif. - Gary Payton had 26 points and 10 assists in a visit to his hometown as the Seattle SuperSonics defeated the Golden State Warriors 106-93 Friday night.

Desmond Mason came off the bench to score 23 points and grab nine rebounds and Rashard Lewis had 19 points and nine rebounds for Seattle, which beat Golden State for the 13th straight time.

Antawn Jamison, coming off a 36-point performance in Golden State's season-opening win over San Antonio on Wednesday, led the Warriors with 24 points and seven boards. Erick Dampier added 13 points and 11 rebounds and Gilbert Arenas had 19 points, 11 assists and six rebounds.

Jason Richardson, who scored 22 points Wednesday against the Spurs and had just five first-half points Friday, made two straight baskets late in the third quarter to pull Golden State within four. Then the Warriors converted five free throws, including one on a technical by Jerome James, in the last 44 seconds to get within three, 78-75, heading into the final quarter.

But the Warriors committed three straight turnovers to start the fourth, and Payton swished a 3-pointer that kept the momentum on Seattle's side. The Sonics built a 12-point lead on a dunk by Lewis.

Brent Barry added 17 for Seattle, the fourth Sonic in double digits.

Warriors' top draft pick Mike Dunleavy was impressive in the first game in which he got a lot of playing time.

He entered with 3:22 left in the first quarter and played the rest of the period and most of the second. He missed the first shot he took off the front rim, but got the rebound and it led to a Warriors basket. He missed his second and third shots, too, but also got his own rebound on the third one.

The 6-foot-9 forward out of Duke made several other impressive hustle plays with his father, former NBA coach Mike Dunleavy Sr., looking on. Dunleavy finished with seven points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes.

Against the Spurs, Dunleavy played just 18.9 seconds and didn't touch the ball.

Payton made four of his first five shots for nine early points as Seattle jumped out to a 13-5 lead.

Golden State opened the season with a 106-98 win over San Antonio, breaking a 16-game losing streak against the Spurs. But two days later, the Warriors were outhustled - evidence that a franchise turnaround won't happen overnight under new coach Eric Musselman. The Warriors have missed the playoffs an NBA-high eight straight seasons.

Musselman, who turns 38 on Nov. 19, is the NBA's youngest head coach - 108 days younger than Seattle's Nate McMillan.

Notes: The Warriors' 13 straight losses to the Sonics tie Golden State's longest losing streak against any team. The Warriors have also lost 13 in a row to Dallas. ... Seattle guard Kenny Anderson did not play because of back spasms. He practiced Thursday, but the Sonics decided to give him one more day of rest. Coach Nate McMillan expects him available for Sunday's game against Utah in Seattle. ... Golden State again played without Danny Fortson, whose father died, and rookie second-round pick Steve Logan, who's in a contract dispute.
