Polls split between Miami, Oklahoma
'Canes fall from No.1 spot in AP
Enquirer news services
Miami's shaky victory over one of the country's worst teams became a big loss Sunday. The Hurricanes are out as No.1.
Oklahoma replaced Miami as the top team in The Associated Press media poll, ending the Hurricanes' record run of 21 consecutive polls at No.1.
As usual, Sooners coach Bob Stoops didn't do cartwheels upon hearing the news that his team was ranked No.1.
"I know everybody'd like me to have something really good to say about it, but in the end - I say this all the time - they're not sending out any trophies this week, so I don't know what it means," he said.
Miami improved to 8-0 with a 42-17 win over Rutgers (1-8), but the Hurricanes trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter. Oklahoma moved to 8-0 with a dominating 27-11 win over Colorado (6-3), ranked No.13 before the game.
The Hurricanes take over the No.2 spot formerly held by the Sooners.
Defending national champion Miami easily retained its No.1 spot in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll. The split No.1s, plus Saturday losses by four previously unbeaten teams, could create a shake-up in the Bowl Championship Series standings to be released today.
The BCS rankings will keep Oklahoma first, but it's too close to call for second between Miami and Ohio State (10-0), which jumped from No.6 to No.3 in the AP poll. The top two teams in the final BCS standings on Dec.8 play for the national title in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan.3.
BAYLOR: Head coach Kevin Steele was fired, but he agreed to finish the season with the Bears.
Steele, in his fourth season at Baylor, is 9-33 and his teams have won just one Big 12 Conference game during his tenure. The Bears are 3-6, 1-4 this season.
MARSHALL: Quarterback Byron Leftwich's injured left shin was examined, but his status is unclear for the Herd's game Nov.12 against the Miami RedHawks.
The injury is in the same area where Leftwich had an operation to repair a stress fracture last winter.
Leftwich was hit in the first quarter of Saturday's 34-20 loss at Akron and left the game. Despite the injury, Leftwich finished 26-of-38 passing for 307 yards, but he didn't throw a TD pass for the first time since Nov.10 of last year.
MICHIGAN STATE: Tailback Dawan Moss was dismissed from the Spartans after being arrested and accused of dragging a Lansing, Mich., police officer with his car following a traffic stop.
Moss, one of Michigan State's team captains, was charged with fleeing and eluding a police officer - a felony - as well as misdemeanor drunken driving and having an open container of alcohol.
WISCONSIN: Running back Anthony Davis was stabbed in the left thigh during a domestic dispute in Madison, Wis.
The 20-year-old Davis was the Big Ten's leading rusher last year and has 1,001 yards on 205 carries and six rushing TDs this season.
