Top 25 games this week

No. 1 Oklahoma (8-0) at Texas A&M (5-4)

Time: 3:30 p.m.

Line: Oklahoma by 9.

What to watch: Next on the Sooners' march through the Big 12 South is a date with the Aggies' "Wrecking Crew" defense, whose reputation is tainted after losing two sizable leads.

Oklahoma's spread offense gives RB Quentin Griffin his openings, which A&M LBs Jerrod Penright and Brian Gamble must eliminate. QB Nate Hybl will keep Aggies honest by utilizing WR Will Peoples and TE Trent Smith.

Texas A&M has gone almost exclusively to aerial attack with QB Dustin Long. His arsenal includes WRs Jamaar Taylor and Bethel Johnson and TE Greg Porter. They must all contend with FS Brandon Everage, ubiquitous of late in Sooners' secondary.

No. 2 Miami (8-0) at Tennessee (5-3)

Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./Ch.12, 7.

Line: Miami by 9.

What to watch: The Vols hope to avoid losing three home games in a season for the first time since Phillip Fulmer took over. Miami is either ripe for the picking or out to make a statement after struggling at Rutgers.

Latter is likely if QB Ken Dorsey lets his experience do the talking.

Tennessee's iron man, LB Eddie Moore, will devote his energy to slowing Hurricanes RB Willis McGahee, who already has run for 1,034 yards and 16 TDs. Vols hope their ground attack can exploit flaw in Miami defense. Tennessee RB Cedric Houston finally healthy, but Jabari Davis (bruised chest) is questionable. Vols QB Casey Clausen hopes TE Jason Witten can keep 'Canes LB Jonathan Vilma occupied.

Baylor (3-6) at No. 4 Texas (8-1)

Time: 12:30 p.m.

Line: Texas by 40 1/2.

What to watch: The Longhorns' national-championship aspirations need help. Bears coach Kevin Steele begins farewell tour.

No. 15 Oregon (7-2) at No. 5 Washington State (8-1)

Time: 3:30 p.m.

Line: Washington State by 4 1/2.

What to watch: Now alone atop the Pacific 10, the Cougars look to snap a four-game skid in the series with the Ducks.

They'll have to do better against Oregon RB Onterrio Smith, who ran through them for 285 yards and three TDs last year. Smith battling sore knee and might not be at full speed, but freshman Terrence Whitehead also is capable.

WSU needs solid efforts from DT Rien Long against run and from CB Marcus Trufant, who must take WR Keenan Howry out of QB Jason Fife's scheme. Oregon must get pressure on Cougars QB Jason Gesser. If Ducks can't get to him, FS Keith Lewis will have to be everywhere at once covering wideout trio of Mike Bush, Devard Darling and Jerome Riley.

Northwestern (3-7) at No. 6 Iowa (9-1)

Time/TV: Noon/ESPN2.

Line: Iowa by 28.

What to watch: The Hawkeyes sit two wins from a perfect Big Ten campaign. Whether that will mean ticket to Rose Bowl remains to be seen. The Wildcats' 41-37 victory against Indiana last week was encouraging, as TB Jason Wright continued to thrive.

But Iowa's defense, led by LB Fred Barr, won't be as accommodating.

QB Brett Basanez will have to be sharp for Wildcats to generate enough points to keep pace. Iowa QB Brad Banks is likely to put up another big score, though Northwestern CB Raheem Covington is good enough to take away one of his aerial options. Hawkeyes RB Jermelle Lewis still listed on depth chart, and coach Kirk Ferentz says any discipline following his legal troubles will be handled internally. RB Fred Russell (hand) is expected to return for the Hawkeyes.

Ole Miss (5-4) at No. 7 Georgia (8-1)

Time/TV: 7 p.m./ESPN2.

Line: Georgia by 141/2.

What to watch: Since toppling Florida, things haven't gone swimmingly for Ole Miss. Last week's 31-24 loss to Auburn was the closest of the Rebels' three consecutive SEC losses in which they couldn't run or stop the run. FS Eric Oliver having to make too many tackles for Ole Miss. RB Musa Smith hopes to shine for the Bulldogs, who still lead the SEC East after last week's loss to Florida.

Look for Georgia QB David Greene to give WR Terrence Edwards chance to redeem himself early for last week's costly drop against Florida. RB Robert Williams is best hope for Rebels to energize their rushing attack, but he remains doubtful (shoulder/ankle). QB Eli Manning might have opportunities against Bulldogs' secondary if his protectors can keep DE David Pollack out of backfield.

No. 8 Virginia Tech (8-1) at Syracuse (3-6)

Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./ESPN.

Line: Virginia Tech by 12.

What to watch: The Carrier Dome hasn't been kind to the Hokies, who have lost six of eight trips there, but the Orangemen will need a supreme effort to protect their turf this time.

QB Troy Nunes has sparked Syracuse offense, which Tech DEs Nathaniel Adibi and Cols Colas will try to extinguish. Hokies hope to regain the services of LB Vegas Robinson (ankle sprain), whose absence was felt when they failed to shut down Pittsburgh's running game.

Syracuse RBs Walter Reyes and Damien Rhodes hope holes are still there. RB Lee Suggs will have his endurance tested while running mate Kevin Jones (hamstring) sits out. QB Bryan Randall must take advantage of a porous Orange secondary. Tech PK Carter Warley (lower back) still sidelined.

No. 10 Southern California (6-2) at Stanford (2-6)

Time: 7 p.m.

Line: USC by 161/2.

What to watch: This shapes up as the Trojans' first true breather. The Cardinal offense, expected to be a strength, hasn't developed.

Injuries to QB Chris Lewis, still questionable with shoulder ailment, and WR Luke Powell, who's playing half-speed with sprained ankle, haven't helped.

Cardinal won't get any breaks from USC secondary allowing opposing passers to complete only 49.6 percent of attempts. QB Carson Palmer, meanwhile, is on Heisman radar. WRs Mike Williams and Kareem Kelly should have plenty of chances for big catches. SS Oshiomogho Atogwe is Stanford's top defender.

No. 11 Alabama (7-2) at Mississippi State (3-5)

Time: 2 p.m.

Line: Alabama by 211/2.

What to watch: The Tide are ineligible for the SEC title and a bowl berth because of NCAA violations. The Bulldogs are looking for their first SEC victory this season.

No. 21 Iowa State (7-3) at No. 12 Kansas State (7-2)

Time/TV: 7 p.m./TBS.

Line: Kansas State by 131/2.

What to watch: This key Big 12 North clash features two of the league's most dynamic quarterbacks. The Cyclones' Seneca Wallace is the more effective passer, while the Wildcats' Ell Roberson is more dangerous on foot. Iowa State DT Jordan Carstens and NG Nick Leaders must limit K-State's free space.

No. 13 Michigan (7-2) at Minnesota (7-2)

Time/TV: 7:45 p.m./ESPN.

Line: Michigan by 61/2.

What to watch: The TV day concludes with the battle for the "Little Brown Jug," which the Golden Gophers will try to capture for the first time in 14 meetings. Expect the Wolverines to pay attention to Minnesota RB Terry Jackson.

LB Victor Hobson will spearhead that effort. Minnesota QB Asad Abdul-Khaliq needs to perform better against strong defenses; CB Marlin Jackson will make him pay for mistakes. Wolverines QB John Navarre's effectiveness improves when TB Chris Perry and FB B.J. Askew are finding holes. Minnesota LB Ben West must keep them in check.

No. 14 N.C. State (9-1) at Maryland (7-2)

Time: Noon.

Line: Maryland by 61/2.

What to watch: The Wolfpack try again for a record 10th win but must get it on the road against the Atlantic Coast Conference's hottest team.

RB Chris Downs averaging 6.5 yards per carry, which must be addressed by N.C. State LBs Shawn Price and Dantonio Burnette.

Maryland LB Shawne Merriman has emerged as solid complement to defensive leader E.J. Henderson. They'll focus on keeping Wolfpack TB T.A. McLendon out of end zone. QB Philip Rivers needs strong bounce-back game. Don't turn away during punts; Maryland's WR Steve Suter likes returning them, and N.C. State DB Terrence Holt prefers blocking them.

No. 17 Florida State (6-3) at Georgia Tech (6-3)

Time: 3:30 p.m.

Line: Florida State by 7.

What to watch: The Yellow Jackets revived their postseason hopes and now take on the ACC leader. The Seminoles found a quarterback in Adrian McPherson at Wake Forest but lost TB Greg Jones (knee) for the season.

Yellow Jackets LB Recardo Wimbush will try to keep him inside. RB Gordon Clinkscale, who has saved Georgia Tech's ground game, must continue to produce as he opposes Seminoles LB Kendyll Pope. Yellow Jackets QB A.J. Suggs must get WR Kerry Watkins involved. Seminoles PK Xavier Beitia must snap out of slump.

No. 18 Colorado (6-3) at Missouri (4-5)

Time: 12:30 p.m.

Line: Colorado by 41/2.

What to watch: The Buffaloes still control their fate in the Big 12 North but can't overlook the young Tigers.

Virginia (6-3) at No. 19 Penn State (6-3)

Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./Ch.9, 2.

Line: Penn State by 16.

What to watch: The Cavaliers ruined Penn State's bowl chances in last season's finale.

RB Larry Johnson is ignition key for PSU's high-octane offense. Virginia LB Angelo Crowell will try to bottle him up while fellow LB Darryl Blackstock pursues Lions QB Zack Mills.

Virginia takes the field for the first time since six-game winning streak was stopped by Georgia Tech. Tandem of RBs Wali Lundy and Alvin Pearman must control the ball. Cavs QB Matt Schaub sports fine 68 percent completion rate that PSU FS Shawn Mayer will try to reduce.

No. 20 Bowling Green (8-0) at Northern Illinois (6-3)

Time: 2:30 p.m.

Line: Bowling Green by 31/2.

What to watch: This probably will determine the West Division representative in the Mid-American Conference championship game. Could hinge on rushing battle between Falcons' Joe Alls and Huskies' Michael Turner.

Temple (3-6) at No. 22 Pittsburgh (7-2)

Time: Noon.

Line: Pittsburgh by 16.

What to watch: The Panthers' upcoming trip to Miami shapes up as the Big East championship game if Pitt doesn't trip over the Owls.

No. 23 Florida (6-3) at Vanderbilt (2-7)

Time: 2 p.m.

Line: Florida by 22.

What to watch: The Gators must avoid a letdown after upsetting Georgia. The Commodores, typically, are the SEC's worst team.

California (5-4) at No. 25 Arizona State (7-3)

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Line: Arizona State by 41/2.

What to watch: Washington State gave the Sun Devils a reality check last week, but ASU's bowl prospects are good. Not so for probation-hamstrung Golden Bears, but winning campaign in coach Jeff Tedford's first season would be major accomplishment.

With 76 more yards, WR Shaun McDonald will break ASU's school season receiving record. QB Andrew Walter must make his deliveries precise; Cal CBs Jemeel Powell and James Bethea have combined for nine interceptions this year. Bears QB Kyle Boller's biggest worry will be Sun Devils DE Terrell Suggs and his 18 1/2 sacks. Rushing production from RB Joe Igber would take some heat off Boller.
