Man pays $2,900 fine for using banned pesticide

VERSAILLES, Ky. - The Illinois man who used a banned pesticide on several central Kentucky horse farms has paid a $2,900 fine to the state Department of Agriculture.

Scott Buck of Davis, Ill., was fined after an investigation into the use of Fenthion. The pesticide was discontinued for bird control more than 20 years ago. Fenthion now is licensed for use only in Florida and Louisiana to kill mosquitoes, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Ken Franks, administrative branch manager for the Agriculture Department's Division of Pesticides said Mr. Buck was fined for making a pesticide application not in accordance with label directions; applying known ineffective or improper materials; failing to maintain records; applying a pesticide without a license; failing to obtain a license from the Agriculture Department, and failing to obtain or maintain required insurance.
