Earned wings

Adam Karlis of Pierce Township and Lan Hatakeyama of Batavia have obtained private pilot's certificates from Federal Aviation Administration-designated flight examiners.

They are enrolled in the Aviation Technology: Professional Pilot program at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College, which leads to associate of applied science degrees and commercial pilot certificates.

Dudis honored

Wyoming High School student Randal Dudis was recipient of an AFS Awards for Excellence Scholarship. AFS, formerly the American Field Service, is a worldwide organization dedicated to international education and intercultural learning.

The program awards full and partial scholarships to students who wish to study abroad, and is based on leadership, service to the community, and academic excellence.

Randal will study a year in Germany, living with a German family.

Essay winner

Nina Schneider, a fifth-grader at Yavneh Day School, won first prize in an international essay contest conducted by Gems in Israel, an Internet online publication.

The daughter of Dianne and Harry Schneider of Amberley Village won a gift certificate to the Daniel Hotel in Israel.

Eagle Scouts

Scouts from Troop 962, West Chester Township, have been awarded the Eagle Scout Award:

Tim Viars, a senior at Lakota West High School, son of Linda and Phil Viars. For his Eagle community-service project, he restored and improved a hiking and nature trail at Keehner Park.

Chris Shoemaker, a senior at St. Xavier High School, son of Nancy and Dick Shoemaker. He designed and constructed a theater for puppet shows and musical presentations at the Mason Public Library.

Bob Doerning, a senior at St. Xavier High School, son of Liz and Bernie Doerning. He renovated the basement and built storage units for the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati.
