Savvy Strategies

Have plan for holiday shopping

Problem: How can I get through the holidays without piling up the credit-card debt?

Strategy: Don't go shopping without a plan and a budget.

Mary Hurlburt, credit educator at Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Cincinnati, says that poor financial planning can lead to overspending and debt.

When you don't plan, spending can become a burden. Look at your regular income and expenses, and determine the number of gifts you can afford to give and the total amount you can spend.

Draft your plan in November, before the shopping season really starts, based on expenses you'll have in November and December. Decide who you'll shop for and the number of gifts you'll need to buy. If you want to spend more than your income allows, find ways to boost your income. Ask about overtime pay at work; look for seasonal, part-time employment and consider using part of any holiday bonus to offset expenses. .

Stick to your plan by avoiding last-minute shopping. Shopping under stress can lead to more spending. Look for sales, discounts, coupons in newspapers and deals online. Don't pass up thrift shops. Sometimes you can find never-worn items with the sales tags still attached. Ask about markdowns after the holidays.

Also, track your expenses to make sure you are staying on target. Tally your receipts and don't spend more money than you've set aside.
