COLUMBUS - Gov. Bob Taft asked President Bush on Friday to declare five northwest Ohio counties hit by tornadoes disaster areas.
"I have determined this incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the state and the affected local governments," Gov. Taft wrote in a letter to President Bush.
He said federal money is needed for individuals whose homes and businesses were severely damaged in Van Wert, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam and Seneca counties.
Gov. Taft also announced that up to $1.5 million is available for senior citizens and disabled Ohioans in the five counties.
"With this program, we are able to ensure that those hardest hit by Sunday's storms have some assistance while they get back on their feet," Gov. Taft said.
A person must be age 55 and childless or be receiving certain disability benefits and childless to be eligible for a one-time payment of $750. Potential recipients also must live in the five counties, and must contact their county Job and Family Services agencies to apply.
